Prostate gland enlargement – The prostate which is part of the male reproductive system, is a gland located between the male bladder and the penis just in front of the rectum. It acts as a tunnel through which the urethra runs from the bladder to the penis.
The prostate helps in the nourishment and protection of sperm by producing prostatic fluid which contributes largely to the ejaculation process. It facilitates men’s reproductive process together with the sperm and fluid from the seminal vesicles.
A problem could arise when the prostate gland becomes enlarged and encroaches the urethra. This can result in difficult passage of urine from the bladder to the penis.
Prostate gland enlargement, a common medical condition in men over the age of 50, could exert pressure on the bladder and urethra which could cause difficulty in urinating, a frequent need to urinate and problem with fully emptying the bladder, just to mention a few of the symptoms of enlargement.
Everybody handles the condition differently. The symptoms could be mild in some men and need no treatment, while others could need serious medical attention.
Most people are dead worried about an enlarged gland. The reason is that this has often been linked with the risk of developing prostate cancer. This is not always the case. The chance of developing cancer is not any higher for men with an enlarged gland than it is for men without the enlargement.
It is not known exactly what causes prostate gland enlargement. But scientists have suggested a link to the balance of hormones in the body that changes as men get older and which may cause the prostate gland to grow.
Some medical tests might be needed such as a urine test. In more severe cases, a more serious diagnosis may be needed to rule out the possibility of a prostate cancer.
Several mild treatments are usually available to help shrink an enlarged gland and relax the bladder. In more severe cases, medical surgery may be the only option for treating the condition.
In many countries, regular prostate check-up is highly recommended usually to men above the age of 50. Once the gland enlargement has been confirmed, treatment would normally depend on the severity of the symptoms. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as lesser alcohol consumption, exercising regularly etc. has been advised. This should normally help minimize the risk of having prostate enlargement.
Generally speaking, unattended enlarged prostate gland could lead to serious medical conditions. These may include urinary tract infection, acute urinary retention, severe lower abdominal pain and swelling of the bladder.
Whenever you experience any of such symptoms, you should visit a physician or nearest medical center for immediate medical attention.
