7 Habits that can prevent cancer

Cancer is a fairly common underlying medical condition that has affected millions of people the world over. There are indications that an estimated one in every three Americans will develop a form of cancer during their lifetime. Over the years, doctors and researchers have made a lot of progress in understanding the biology of cancer cells and this explains why there is currently a remarkable improvement in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. There are indeed several types of cancers, but that could actually be a topic of its own. According to researchers, a combination of environmental, living conditions as well as genetic factors is associated with most types of cancers. Well, the good news is that nowadays, it’s possible to adopt certain habits and lifestyle changes that will go a long way to reduce your risk of developing cancer. Some of such habits nevertheless include;

1. Quit smoking

Smoking tobacco is one of the biggest preventable causes of cancer. According to researchers, smoking tobacco in all forms, including exposure to secondhand smoke is associated with different types of cancers, including, leukemia, lung, liver, pancreas, stomach, kidney, bowel, ovary, bladder, and cervix cancers, etc.  The reason is that tobacco contains chemicals that harm our DNA, and result in the buildup of cells that cause cancer. Moreover, the chemicals found in tobacco smoke can harm the cleansing system that our body uses to remove toxins. Such toxins can however accumulate and result in cancer. It is therefore apparent that quitting smoking will help you reduce the risk of developing cancer.

2. Maintain a healthy weight

There are also shreds of evidences that obesity increases the risks of many forms of cancers, including breast cancer, esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, thyroid cancer, liver cancer and gallbladder cancer, etc. If you are overweight or obese, you should therefore consider shedding off some weight in a bid to reduce the risk of developing cancer or any other complication associated with obesity. That being said, one of the best tips on losing weight is to consume fewer calories, but instead burn more through exercises.

3. Eat healthy diets

A healthy diet is very crucial for our overall health and well-being. Therefore, eating balanced diets with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains will reduce your risk of developing cancer. On the other hand, unhealthy foods, including saturated fats and red meat are known to be associated with certain types of cancers, notably colon and prostate cancers. Thus, to reduce your risk of developing cancer, you should be ready to ditch unhealthy foods for healthier ones.

4. Exercise regularly

Another tip for reducing your risk of developing cancer is to indulge in exercises as often as possible. It should be noted that physical activities and regular exercise have been linked to a reduced risk of developing certain types of cancers, such as colon, breast and possibly reproductive cancers. Rest assured that regular exercise will help reduce your risk of developing certain types of cancers, even if you do not lose weight in the process.

5. Consume alcohol in moderation

Like tobacco, alcohol consumption is also associated with cancer. Several studies have indicated that there is a link between excess alcohol consumption and certain types of cancers, including mouth, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon and breast cancers. Thus, you may consider reducing the risks of developing certain types of cancers by limiting your intake of alcohol.

6. Practice safe sex

Practicing safe sex will also reduce your risk of developing cancer. The reason is that certain sexually transmitted diseases are associated with an increased risk of cancer. For instance, HPV (human papillomavirus) increases the risk of cervical and mouth cancers, whereas hepatitis can possibly result in liver cancer. Similarly, HIV weakens the immune system, thereby increasing the risk of developing many different kinds of cancers. However, by practicing safe sex, you will be protecting yourself against all these sexually transmitted diseases and infections that can increase your risk of developing cancer.

7. Avoid exposure to radiation

Exposure to radiation is also largely associated with cancer. Thus, you can reduce your risk of developing cancer by getting medical imaging only when necessary. Of course, you should also protect yourself from ultraviolet sunlight, which is known to increase the risk of different kinds of skin cancers, such as melanomas.

Aside these points listed, you can equally reduce your risk of developing cancer by avoiding exposure to industrial and environmental toxins and by also getting enough vitamin D.
